BRTC Affiliated Agencies

Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP)
ONDCP establishes policies, priorities, and objectives for the Nation's drug control program, the goals of which are to reduce illicit drug use, manufacturing, and trafficking; drug-related crime and violence; and drug-related health consequences.

Counterdrug Technology Assessment Center (CTAC)
Responsible for advising the Director of ONDCP on counterdrug research and development policies and programs and for substance abuse addiction and rehabilitation research; assuring the implementation of the scientific research and technology development initiatives that support the National Drug Control Strategy; and serving as the central counterdrug enforcement, drug abuse education, prevention and treatment, research and development organization of the United States Government. The Electronic Proving Ground (EPG) serves as a technical agent for CTAC. In this role, EPG provides engineering expertise in the area of communications and electronics, financial and contractual management of various R&D programs, and manages and administers the CTAC Technology Transfer Program.

Sandia, operator of BRTC, is a national security laboratory operated for the U.S. Department of Energy by the Sandia Corporation. Recently, Sandia conducted a double-blind test of an instrument that its manufacturer said could detect the presence of human beings at a distance through any material. The test results showed that the DKL LifeGuard Model 2 "human presence detector" failed to meet its published specifications and its performance was no better than random chance. Southwest Border High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA)
The High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) program, funded by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), provides resources to areas identified as having the most critical drug-trafficking problems that affect the rest of the country. The Southwest Border HIDTA, designated in 1990, encompasses areas along the 2,000-mile Southwest Border in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.
