Law Enforcement Analysis Facility (LEAF)
What is the LEAF?
Background
The LEAF was established at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Rome, NY in
1995 as a firewall between the Air Force (AF) and Law Enforcement (LE) and Corrections
Agencies. Its inception followed close on the
heels of the development of the northeasts regional National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC-Northeast)
and was established as an appendage to the center. Its
purpose is to evaluate, test and demonstrate AF technology to gather data as to how the
technology may be applied in the LE and Corrections arena. The LEAF also provides invaluable exposure of emerging, non-commercially available,
technologies to the LE and Corrections world. AFRL
is the leading research and development (R&D) site for audio and imaging technology.
The LEAF houses this cutting edge technology and utilizes it for demonstration purposes to
the LE and Corrections Agencies. Funded by
the National Institute of
Justice (NIJ), Office of Science and Technology (OS&T) and a facility of
NLECTC-Northeast, the LEAF acts as a conduit of information between LE and Corrections, the AF
and the NIJ.
Objective
The LEAFs objective is to demonstrate, test, evaluate and transition technology,
specifically AF technologies, to law enforcement and corrections. The LEAF also bears a responsibility to the AF in
providing/collecting real-world data for testing and modification purposes. Honest Broker evaluations of
both AF and commercially available technology are performed at the LEAF. All LEAF efforts point toward one final goal: the eventual transitioning of cutting-edge
technology to LE and Corrections agencies with a concentration on economically challenged
agencies.
